January 1, 2005 - New Years Day Ride (Commentary by Jim Oldham):

How many riders did we have and how cold was it? Just ask any of the following: Brian Barrett, Karen Cameron, Dennis Gregory, Pat Hodgekinson, Focker Jakel, Lev Krivitsky, Jim Oldham, Rob Onodera, John Plant, Rod Schuhart, Norm Smith or Randy Szasz. All braved the coldest temperatures we've yet experienced (-22 C) for a New Years Day ride in the last 5 years. Luckily for all involved there wasn't any wind to speak of. “Bracing” is mildly put - the other words used can't be put in print. Pat Hodgekinson and Lev Krivitsky even did a few meters on their road bikes, without even falling down. After one lap of the park all returned safely if not sound to be treated to some liquid refreshment supplied by Randy Szasz and then retired to the Starbucks in the West hills Shopping Centre for something warm. Then the stories really started to fly. All in all a short but enjoyable event to start the year off right.

January 1, 2005 - Terry Rides Maui during the holidays (Commentary by Terry Kozlyk)

My best ride was up Haleakala, right from Paia (sea level) to the summit of 10,023 feet in 6 hrs, 2 minutes. The record is by ex-pro Jonathan Vaughters; 2 hrs 36 minutes; this years "Cycle to the Sun" race winner in 2 hrs 58 minutes, approx. twice the speed I was going. What cycling heaven there. Not the easiest but good for a Crankmaster. I dedicated my ride that day, Sunday December 19 to Diane DesChamps. Cycling fatalities have to be used to raise cyclists safety awareness. The Maui Bicycle Alliance also has its issues on the island. Development of bike paths are stalled. A bike lane already in place on the main hiway will be removed to give more room for traffic. Over the 4 years we have been there, vehicular traffic has increased. I had several close calls. With tourists driving & not paying attention to the roads but taking in the scenery, it makes it somewhat perilous for us cyclists.
