C4 Wednesday Night race Series: A weekly series of 15 events hosted by The Calgary Crankmasters Cycling Club (C4), and volunteer hosts from other clubs.
================================================
NEW for 2025
• All serious racers in the WNS must be a Primary or Secondary member of Crankamsters and have an ABA Citizens or UCI license to participate. This provides protection for everyone in case of an accident and provides an extra layer of insurance and access to any treatment that may be required. It protects our club as well. Non license holders will not be granted waivers.
================================================
The WNS is Calgary's longest continuously running mid-week road series, and is open to all members of the Alberta Bicycle Association (ABA). Starting in 2008, we have been racing every year since.
It's a great place to learn to race in a relaxed fun environment, or to hone your skills before bigger events. Group sizes vary, but typically run between 5 to 15 people in each race group. Over the past 10 years more than 450 people have participated in this series. From the youngest (13) to the oldest (72), there is room for all to compete in 3 different mixed gender ability categories A, B or C. And now unlicensed D group.
Although most are here just for some fun, WNS is also a great stepping stone and training ground. Many of Alberta's best road racers have participated over the years (in our A Group), including participation from Provincial Champions, one Masters National Champion, one Masters World Champion, and one former participant has gone on to multiple Junior National Championships and a position in the Women's World Tour.
The races are held at various locations in and around Calgary, and consist of different events that are both challenging and fun for all riders. They includes road races, time trials, hill climbs, criteriums, team races, sprints, and many other styles of race over the years. This is where you can learn some strategies, and for licensed racers, gain club points towards category cash prizes at the end of the year.
No prior racing experience is required to take part, but you should have at least basic group riding skills for all mass start events. If you're not sure about your group riding skills, then come to our Saturday, Sunday or Monday night rides first.
If you want to get racing right away, there is no group riding experience required for our time trial and hill climb events, all you need to do is show up with a bike, although a positive attitude is also a great think to bring! We usually kick off the season with our iconic Woodland Rd Time Trial, so this is a great place to start your racing journey, no matter where you're starting from.
We do encourage all to take the ABA's Learn to Race Clinic if you can. They cover information about ABA racing in the province, and also spend a couple hours practicing basic skills that will help you race safely, and with more confidence in the pack. There is no requirement to participate in the Clinic, so if you can't make it work, we'd still love to see you at WNS!
The races start the first or second week of May and run for 15 consecutive weeks. You sign up for the series and come whenever you can.
We have now posted the provisional 2025 WNS Calendar.
Note: All events are subject to change pending approvals and/or discretion of the organizers.
The race series is open to all members of Crankmasters. If you belong to another ABA sanctioned cycling club, or if you are an independent ABA member, you can take part by signing up as a secondary member of Crankmasters. This also allows you to attend our group rides, and other off the road events.
You don't need an ABA race license to take part, but if you have one you're welcome to participate. ABA Cat 2 and Cat 3 racers will participate in our A group, and ABA Cat 4 and ABA Citizen racers will participate in our A, B or C group depending on which group is the best fit for them.
There is no entry fee other than becoming a primary or secondary member of the Crankmasters.
For WNS races, scoring is determined by placement in the particular race. All scoring and any bonus points are at the discretion of the race organizer.
